Pre-production Caetano e.City Gold shown in London
Ahead of delivery of 34 zero-emission Caetano e.City Gold single-deckers next year to Abellio London, a pre-production vehicle has arrived for testing and familiarisation.
Says Abellio UK Bus Engineering Director Jon Eardley: “The prototype bus has performed perfectly and the feedback from staff and stakeholders is extremely positive. We are looking forward to adding these vehicles to our fleet in 2020 and beyond.”
The new buses will enter service on Transport for London (TfL) contracted routes C10 (Canada Water-Victoria Station) and P5 (Patmore Estate-Elephant & Castle) from March 2020 and will be the first Caetano electric buses for the UK.
Indeed, the order marks a return after a long absence to the UK bus market for Caetano, although in the coach sector it enjoys considerable success as National Express’ sole body supplier, providing the Levante coach.
Abellio Bus London MD Tony Wilson, says the choice of Caetano was made partly due the operator and manufacturer have a good relationship with their shared Japanese shareholder Mitsui.
The project is a collaboration with battery storage operator, Zenobé Energy. Siemens charging equipment is to be used.
It is the first London EV financing project for Zenobé since the company announced its £120m partnership funding in May, to enable the electrification of fleets, with the potential to double the number of electric vehicles on UK roads.
The Caetano e.City Gold is a 10.7m development of an existing 12m design used in Portugal, adapted to meet TfL’s latest specification, that are unique in the world.
It can carry 60 passengers (including standees) with a low-floor throughout and has zero emission electric heating.
It has 350kW/h of storage and Abellio pays for the buses on a per-km basis.
The new buses will include a number of features required by the new TfL Bus Safety Standard including:
- Stoneridge Camera Monitoring System to replace wing mirrors
- Intelligent Speed Assist
- Acoustic Vehicle Alert System
- Revised front design to improve pedestrian/vulnerable road user safety, that includes cant-rail mounted windscreen wipers
The bus is part of a wider family of zero emission urban mobility vehicles developed by CaetanoBus, many of which have already been delivered to several Portuguese cities.
