Renault to add hydrogen fuel-cell vans in 2020
In a significant move that brings hydrogen fuel-cells (HFC) to the mass market, Renault is introducing hydrogen fuel-cell Kangoo and Master vans in 2020.
It will give them three times more range than the current battery-electric versions, but still with zero emissions.
Rather than a full fuel-cell vehicle, it will be used as a range extender, providing 10kW of electric and thermal power to increase the vehicles’ ranges, meaning that for short distance work, the fuel-cell will not need to be active.
A further advantage of hydrogen is that fuelling only takes 5-10 minutes.
The fuel-cell versions will be offered alongside the existing Kangoo ZE and Master ZE battery-electric vans, providing a buying choice, depending on duty cycle.
Developed in partnership with Symbio, a Groupe Michelin subsidiary, the Kangoo ZE Hydrogen and Master ZE Hydrogen will boast ranges of over 350km, compared with 120km for the Master Z. and 230km for the Kangoo ZE, enabling their use for long-distance fleets.
Expected in the first-half 2020, Renault Master ZE Hydrogen will be available in two van and two chassis cab versions. Two hydrogen tanks are located under the body, ensuring no compromises on the load volume, which ranges from 10.8m3 to 20m3 with an additional weight of 200kg.
From the end of 2019, Renault Kangoo ZE Hydrogen will offer a real-life range of 370km plus a load volume of 3.9m3.
Pricing for the Kangoo ZE Hydrogen starts at €48,300 plus VAT (including battery purchase and excluding local incentives). Renault has not announced pricing for other markets or whether the vans will launch in the UK.
Denis Le Vot, Alliance SVP, Renault-Nissan LCV Business Unit, says: “Groupe Renault completes its range of electric light commercial vehicles with the launch of Renault Master ZE Hydrogen and Renault Kangoo ZE Hydrogen.
“These vehicles provide professionals with all the range they require for their long-distance journeys as well as record fuelling times.
“And the advantages do not stop there, as Renault Master ZE Hydrogen and Renault Kangoo ZE Hydrogen can run on decarbonised energy that respects the environment while offering all the comfort of electric driving.”
