Order for Yutong electric buses placed by First in Leeds

First Bus is working with Yutong and Zenobe in an electric bus partnership.

In May 2020, the partnership plans to roll out nine new Yutong E10 10.8m electric single-deckers in Leeds, which will be provided by Pelican Bus and Coach.

Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme (ULEB) funding is being used to pay for the vehicles. Charging infrastructure and onboard batteries will be match-funded and installed by Zenobe Energy.

The news follows First’s trial of a Yutong E12 demonstrator bus on its York Park & Ride service last year, and is the third order to be won for Yutong's electric buses following Newport Bus and Go North East earlier this year.

Jon Harman, Head of Fleet at First Bus, said: “First Bus is proud to be helping to improve air quality in Leeds with these new vehicles, which will benefit from innovative electrification technologies. We are delighted to be partnering with Pelican and Zenobe in this joint venture.”

Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Bus UK, said: “Pelican are delighted to receive this valuable order from First Bus. The supply of our zero emission vehicles, with electric air conditioning, will not only improve the air quality, but will provide an enhanced passenger experience.”

Steven Meersman, co-founder of Zenobe Energy, said: “Zenobe are excited to support First Bus in implementing their successful ULEB bid at Hunslet park with our infrastructure-as-a-service-model, reducing risk and upfront cost while achieving a zero-emission transition.”

The seating capacity of the 10.8m E10s is yet to be confirmed. The first will enter build in January. They will have the standard battery package with 422kW/h of energy storage.

As is the case with orders for Yutong battery electric buses already placed by Go North East and Newport Bus, one of the First Leeds examples will be completed and shipped ahead of schedule. That will permit timely commissioning of charging infrastructure.

The news follows sales of nine E10s to Go-Ahead-owned Go North East, which is due to receive them in June 2020. Newport Transport has ordered 15 of Yutong’s E12 electric single-deckers, which are due for delivery in March next year.

The Yutong E10 has been extensively trialled in London and is currently with London United.
