21st Century helps get vehicles ready for service

21st Century Technology has been working with operators to help them prepare their vehicles for a return to regular service.

While much has already been done to ensure vehicles are ready for social distancing measures, 21st Century’s engineering teams have been working around the clock to ensure that existing on board technology systems are fully functional and will not prevent vehicles getting back out on the road.

Mark Johnson, Director of Fleet Systems for 21st Century, says: “For many of our customers, our nationwide network of FITAS-accredited engineers is the support structure for their on-board systems, not least their CCTV. 

“The systems we install are used to operating anywhere from 18-24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so ensuring that the equipment operators have invested heavily in is still working to optimum performance after an extended lay off is important. 

“Especially when entering a period when evidence gathering may be vital to safeguard the operators.”

21st Century has been working with existing and new customers to provide system health check audits on their fleets to ensure the vehicles can re-enter service. 

Mark explains:  “An audit can take as little as 30 minutes if the system is in good working order, so we can cover a large number of vehicles in a single shift.

“If there is a problem that cannot be rectified by a configuration adjustment there and then, we can rapidly organise the stock and engineering provision needed to put the problem right and let the operator get their vehicle where it needs to be – on the road demonstrating the safe capacity of the UK’s public transport network.

“The UK is about to enter a never-before-seen period where passengers will quite rightly be acutely aware of social distancing and the measures that operators are putting in place to ensure passengers can make their essential journeys safely.”

As part of the preparation for getting vehicles back into service, 21st Century is seeing a surge in requests for demonstrations of the Journeo Remote Condition Monitoring (RCM) and Agnostic Video Management System (AVMS) applications. 

By installing the Journeo Edge on-vehicle gateway on to their vehicles, operators are able to enhance the capability of the CCTV systems they have already invested in, irrespective of the manufacturer that provided them. 

Operators are able to access information from the cloud-based portal at any time, from anywhere, giving them full insight into the health of the CCTV systems installed on their fleets and allowing them to download footage in to the secure, online EvidenceSafe.

Mark concludes:  “By connecting legacy systems to the Journeo Edge, whether that be Timespace, Synectics, Hikvision or any other manufacturers equipment, we can make them part of the Internet of Things and ensure that operators can get operationally-critical information on the health of their systems and even download footage, without anyone ever having to visit the vehicle. 

“Journeo Transit has been in development for some time and operators are now starting to view the platform with real interest, seeing that it can make their operation safer whilst also saving them valuable time and money. 

“We offer a fully-managed service alongside the platform to ensure that as soon as any system fault is detected, our engineering teams are alerted to the need for a service visit.”
