A clean future for heavy-duty vehicle powertrains is within reach

Christoph Domke

Given the massive current interest in the global trucking sector and new technologies/business concepts, FTI Consulting has published a paper, written with my colleagues, which looks at total cost of ownership as to future truck powertrain solutions for the US market

A myriad of new powertrain technologies are competing to usurp diesel as the heavy duty vehicle powertrain of choice.

Of these, we found that the economic case for battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains in the US market will be favourable faster than previously expected.

Our results indicate that we stand on the precipice of revolution in the road freight sector, with disruptive commercial implications across the value chain.

A similar follow-on of this total cost of ownership analysis will be published for the European market in early 2021.

With the biggest van and truck manufacturers in Europe now committed to phasing out traditional combustion engines running on diesel by 2040 (a decade earlier than planned), Europe’s alternative powertrain trucking industry is also likely to advance rapidly after EU ministers greenlit plans in December 2020 to cut tolls by 50% for emission-free trucks until April 2023.
